How Do I Train My Yorkie to Not Bark at People Who Come to Our House?
December 26, 2017 by It's a Yorkie Life
Having a Yorkie is both a great treat and can be somewhat annoying when they tend to do things that you do not like. One of these things can be barking when people come to the house. Often, Yorkie barking occurs because they are territorial, and they are staking their claim on their house, hereās how to fix it so when people come over, they will feel the need to bark at them when they come in. Being smaller dogs, Yorkies can feel the need to bark a lot when people come over because they are trying to make an impression. If you want to train them to stop barking when people come over, follow these few steps to make your life easier.
One way to train them not to bark at people at the door, instead teach them to sit as soon as someone comes in the door. By redirecting their attention to doing something less noisy and annoying, you can teach them that when people come over, they are not a threat to them, and instead, they are welcome. When you teach them to sit when people come over, you have to be consistent with your training.
Start by using treats and some sort of noise maker. When you ask them to sit, make the noise and give them a treat if they do it, if they donāt, then donāt give them anything. After a time, they will be conditioned to know they will get a treat when they sit down and not bark. If they start barking and you ignore them, they will eventually know that they will not get a treat because they are not doing the thing they are supposed to. Try it with someone when you invite them over. If they sit as soon as you make the noise, even if someone comes over, they will start to do this all the time.
It can be a very long and tiring process to train a Yorkie not to bark when someone comes to the house, but you have to be patient. This is a huge factor in making sure that you are successful at your attempts to train them. Eventually, it will happen, and when it does, you and your Yorkie can both celebrate the fact that you both made it through the training process, and there are no longer any annoying barks every time you have a guest over.
