Wanted: A Healthy Yorkie

December 1, 2015 by It's a Yorkie Life

Hi all, I don’t share anything very personal here because this is a site that celebrates Yorkies and our combined love affair with them. But over the last weekend, the Yorkie that inspired this site, Chloe, passed on. We’d had her for 14.5 wonderful years, and she was an enormous part of our lives. Her passing, although not unexpected, has left a big hole in our hearts and our home. You’ll see her pictured below (and in all our memes).

So, we’ve been looking for a quality Yorkie puppy to bring that Yorkie attitude back into our homes. And I have to say, I’m shocked at how difficult and almost impossible it is to be able to find Yorkies.

To be honest, the last time I looked for a Yorkie was 15 years ago. The internet was just beginning, and we didn’t have networks, websites, and social media at that time. So THEN, finding a Yorkie was tough. But today? I’m shocked to discover that the Yorkie community seems to have not progressed beyond the year 2000. Yorkie Rescue Clubs appear to focus entirely on those needing special care (a worthy cause to be sure), and the AKC’s puppy listing seems filled with outdated information and non-responsive breeders (certainly not all – but an incredible number). Even finding breeders is tough because many of them do not maintain websites at all – and those that do are woefully outdated.

So is it me? Or is finding a healthy Yorkie looking for a home nearly impossible? Are there resources out there that I haven’t found that provide a good network of Yorkies looking for a home?

Or, would such a resource be of as much value to you as it would be to me. I’m happy to create it to make it easier for you (and me) to find a healthy Yorkie. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below. And if you know of a good resource, please share that as well!
