What are the Pros and Cons of Owning a Yorkie?

February 14, 2016 by It's a Yorkie Life

What are the Pros and Cons of Owning a Yorkie? There are many dog breeds out there vying for the title of most popular dog, and the Yorkshire Terrier–Yorkie for short–is sixth on the list according to the American Kennel Club’s annual ranking.  This comes as no surprise, as the Yorkie has consistently ranked highly over the past few years.  But what makes the Yorkie such a popular choice for owners?

For starters, Yorkies are small and need only a moderate amount of exercise, which makes them perfect for apartment and home living.  Despite their small size, Yorkies provide great companionship. The AKC reports that a high percentage of Yorkie owners believe them to be great with kids and with other animals. They are considered brave, determined, and investigative dogs that are not aware of their small stature. In fact, Yorkies have earned the reputation of being “tomboyish” regardless of gender.  Yorkies are also very vocal when it comes to intruders, which can make them excellent watchdogs for your home. Because of their curiosity, they are also highly adaptable to their surroundings and make great travel buddies.  Indeed, you might see more Yorkies in purses than you might see of other dog breeds.  Yorkies are also distinctive (and cute) in their appearance due to their long silky coats that attract quite a bit of attention. Finally, expect to have your Yorkie in your family for a long time as they are a healthy breed that can live between 12 to 15 years old.

So what are the Pros and Cons of Owning a Yorkie?

Yorkies, however, are not without their difficulties.  Though Yorkies may be great watchdogs, their barking can become quite bothersome if not trained properly.  Yorkies also require a strong leader, or they can quickly become the boss of the household and engage in naughty behaviors like pulling. Despite not needing large amounts of exercise, Yorkies require some human interaction daily, or they may also develop bad habits.  Moreover, Yorkie owners should expect to spend a lot of time grooming their dog.  Yorkie hair is long and requires daily maintenance.  Professional grooming is also recommended regularly.  Even though they may have long hair, Yorkies are still susceptible to the cold and must be kept indoors the majority of the time during cold weather. Finally, though Yorkies are healthy, their small size and quick nature make them both fragile and susceptible to injury from being stepped on.

Regardless of these challenges, it is no wonder that Yorkies rank so high on the list every year. Their sassy but friendly nature and their charming good looks make them the perfect dog for homebodies. If you are looking for a new companion to add to your family, you can never go wrong with a Yorkie!
